Here is a list of MS tips we have compiled and published on our Facebook page so far:
MS Tip # 1 – MS patients should avoid heat as it can worsen their symptoms. Going out on a hot day, sunbathing, cooking or just using the hair dryer should be avoided.
MS Tip # 2 – Living with multiple sclerosis can cause frustration, helplessness, depression and sometimes anger. To cope with the disease, it is important that you relax yourself and learn how to manage stress.
MS Tip # 3 – MSers should try to stay as active as possible, not only physically, but also mentally, intellectually and socially, no matter what your physical limitations are.
MS Tip # 4 – An unpredictable disease like Multiple Sclerosis not only affects you, but it also has a significant impact on your family members, like your parents, siblings, partner or children. Discuss your emotions and MS related issues with your family so they can help you cope better, especially if you are going through a relapse phase.
MS Tips # 5 – MS patients should keep a positive attitude and accept the fact that there are events in life that you cannot control. Exercise regularly, eat well-balanced meals and make sure you have enough rest and sleep so your body is able to recover from stressful events.
MS Tip # 6 – People with multiple sclerosis can benefit greatly from exercise, as it can help with fatigue and other MS symptoms as well as overall health and well-being. Make sure you follow a daily exercise plan, even if it is just for 5-10 minutes. Take breaks in between and never over work yourself.
MS Tip # 7 – Sleep is critical for MS patients. Getting enough sleep is important to feel fresh and active. Taking short naps during the day can help a lot in bringing back the energy and getting rid of the tiredness.
MS Tip # 8 – Taking Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin D daily significantly decreases the number of MS flares. However, the daily intake of Vitamin D should not exceed 1000 IU.
MS Tip # 9 – Common cold, fever or other viral infections can also trigger MS flare-ups, so MS patients should avoid getting a cold or other viral infection.
MS Tip # 10 – If you have difficulty with balance and strength, taking a shower can be difficult at times. Use a sturdy shower chair to avoid losing your balance in the shower. A good shower chair will also let you move or turn around while sitting without much effort.
MS Tip # 11 – A number of mobility aids are available to help you move around easily. Walking sticks and canes are great if you have balance and stability issues, or if you cannot move from one place to the other without support.
MS Tip # 12 – Safety around the home is also important for MS patients. Minor changes around the house can reduce injuries from accidents like falling or getting a burn. Keep your house well-lit and always ask for help when you are having problems doing a chore yourself.
MS Tip # 13 – Wear comfortable shoes and avoid high heels and pointed toes so you do not trip and fall. Go for sturdy shoes with a low heel. Slippers are ideal to wear as they are comfortable and safe.
MS Tip # 14 – Use cooling products in summers, like an ice pack to stay cool. Taking frequent showers and switching on the cooler or AC will help you deal with an exaggeration of MS symptoms, also known as pseudo-exacerbation.
MS Tip # 15 – If you have problems with your grip, you will have difficulty writing. Use an Easy-grip pen or pencil to make writing joyous for you.
MS Tip # 16 – Gentle stretching of your legs daily will help with leg cramps. Hydration is also important.
