We uploaded a list of useful and handy Tips for MS patients a while ago on our blog.
This post is Part 2 of the earlier post and lists some more tips we have compiled and published on our Facebook page so far. If you haven’t read the earlier post, click on the link below to read it.
Now that you have read part 1 of ‘Tips for MS patients’, time to read some more tips:
MS Tip # 17 – Light exercise during the day will help with restful sleep at night.
MS Tip # 18 – Bladder issues are a common problem especially at night because the bladder fails to evacuate completely in MS patients. Consult your urologist if you are experiencing bladder issues.
MS Tip # 19 – Becoming overheated while exercising can worsen symptoms of MS, so make sure you keep yourself cool during exercise and stop as soon as you start feeling tired.
MS Tip # 20 – Try to exercise in the morning when it is not very hot. Cool yourself from time to time with a cold splash of water or by using a wet chilled towel.
MS Tip # 21 – Exercise and physical activity is good for your overall health and it can also help you manage your MS symptoms and keep you mobile.
MS Tip # 22 – Exercise improves strength, endurance, balance and coordination and also helps with your mood, thinking, bowel function and overall quality of life.
MS Tip # 23 – MS patients who are able to walk can choose to use a motorized scooter over long distances so that they still have energy left to enjoy an event or activity once they get there.
MS Tip # 24 – With MS, you have to think differently about how you move around, but it does not mean that you need to stop moving altogether. Staying mobile lets you keep doing the things that make life meaningful and enjoyable.
MS Tip # 25 – Most people with MS don’t become severely disabled, and two-thirds remain able to walk. They may need a walking aid such as a cane, crutches or walker.
MS Tip # 26 – Friends and family are often quick to offer suggestions on how to live with MS. If you are not sure about something, discuss with your neurologist or have a heart to heart talk with another MS patient.
MS Tip # 27 – Simple MS friendly home modifications can make your life a lot easier. Here are some ways to do that:
1. Clear clutter around you and remove unnecessary things from countertops, worktables etc.
2. Set up your ‘work table’ before you start something like chopping vegetables, styling your hair etc. Keep everything you will need at arm’s length.
3. If you love to cook, place important things you use frequently in "easy reach zones" like the counter top, so you can easily access them even while sitting.
4. Install grip bars in the toilet and shower area for a firm grip. This way you will be able to get up and down easily.
5. If you are uneasy on your feet, remove any obstructions on the floor, including small rugs and carpets so you don’t trip and fall.
MS Tip # 28 – Set aside time to relax yourself. Simply watching TV might not be enough. Yoga and meditation can be helpful.
MS Tip # 29 – If you are having a challenging day, it can become overwhelming easily. Stay in control by focusing on specific issues one at a time.
MS Tip # 30 – Getting help from your family and friends every now and then is not something to be ashamed of. Call for help when you need it!
MS Tip # 31 – A Multiple Sclerosis relapse is also known as an exacerbation or flare-up.
If you have more tips to share with other MSers, you can mention them in the comments section below.
After an MRI i was diagnosed of MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. After years on medications, symptoms worsened with tremors on my right hand, numbness and tingling, muscle weakness and loss of speech. Fortunately last year, i learnt about RICH HERBS FOUNDATION and their Multiple Sclerosis alternative treatment (ww w. richherbsfoundation. com), the Multiple Sclerosis treatment made a great difference, most of my symptoms including tremors, weakness and others gradually disappeared. I improved greatly over the 6 months treatment, its been a years since the treatment, i have no symptoms. I have a very good quality of life and a supportive family!
