Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease which is becoming quite common in our region of the world, but awareness regarding the disease is next to nil in Pakistan. Lack of awareness makes it worse for MS patients to get proper treatment, understand their disease, and live a better life with this disabling disease. This is why arranging MS Awareness Seminars and MS patient meetups is crucial not only for patient education but also for their families and for the general public.
Sanofi Genzyme Pakistan recently arranged an MS Awareness Seminar titled LifeWithMS on Thursday 13th April 2017 at Shalimar Hall, Faletti’s Hotel, Lahore. Some of the top neurologists and neurophysicians were present at the Seminar to talk about MS, its symptoms, and answer queries and questions asked by patients and attendees at the event.
Pakistan Society of Neurology (PSN) showed their support by arranging a panel of neurologists and neuro-physicians at the MS Awareness Seminar. The Society for Multiple Sclerosis Patients in Pakistan also participated in the event. Patients from Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, and surrounding cities attended and participated in the seminar. Check our photo album from the event.
The event started with recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a brief introduction of the panel of neurologists who were present at the event. They included Dr. Amer Ikram, Dr. Muhammad Athar Javed, Dr. Mohsin Zaheer, Dr. Mujeeb Ur Rehman Abid, Dr. Qasim Bashir, and Dr. M Naeem Kasuri to name a few. The panel members discussed symptoms of MS and explained what happens in MS. They highlighted the fact that as compared to Western countries, the ratio of MS in Asia is less. However, the alarming fact is that it is rising rapidly.
The panel of neurophysicians addressed the families of patients that even if one is diagnosed with MS, the family members must not feel burdened or disheartened. MS can be tackled with the right treatment and physiotherapy plans. Talk with your neurologist regarding what medications to start and the patient can work towards their path to improvement.
